International Women’s Day is on March 8th and for this very special occasion we have prepared 8 interesting facts about women in IT.
Greatest milestones
Mankind’s biggest achievements include the Apollo program, which was largely made possible thanks to Margaret Hamilton. She became the lead programmer on the Apollo guidance computer and was present during every mission with a crew. Her coding skills made it possible for humans to eventually land on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.
How Thailand joined the web
The internet revolution reached Thailand largely thanks to Dr Kanchana Kanchanasut who became the first Thai person to use email and who registered the country’s code top-level domain (ccTLD): .th. She was awarded a place in the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013.
International recognition
There are many famous and successful women in IT. Susan Wojcicki is the CEO of YouTube, while Jade Raymond, who initially worked as a programmer for Sony, joined Ubisoft Montreal and led the creation of the first Assassin’s Creed game, which quickly turned into the company’s most iconic series.
Female roles in IT
It is estimated that nearly 30% of women in IT specialize in backend technologies, while frontend remains the second most popular branch, slightly above testers. Interestingly, women occupy testing positions far more often than their male colleagues.
Starting later
On average, women tend to start their IT adventure later than men. Furthermore, nearly half of the interviewed women have changed their profession to join the IT sector.
Women in leadership positions
A report by IDC shows that the number of women in higher-ranking leadership roles was 24% in 2019 and these statistics continue to increase. It was reported that having a roughly equal number of women in senior positions in an organization increased the probability of equal pay as well as job satisfaction.
New female-led companies
Some of the biggest cities with the highest number of tech startups created by women are Chicago and Boston in the USA, Paris in France and Tel Aviv in Israel.
Tech millionaires
Women in tech are some of the worlds’ wealthiest businessmen with net worth of several billion dollars. Some examples are Meg Whitman the CEO of Hewlett-Packard and Denise Coates – the Founder and Joint CEO at bet365.
